Tara Canyon – Complete Guide
A turquoise-green river cuts through cliffs over a thousand meters high, while the sound of its rapids blends with the echo resonating deep within the rock. This is Tara – the “Tear of Europe,” a river whose beauty takes your breath away and reminds you that nature is the greatest artist of all.
Over 82 kilometers of its course, the Tara River has carved the Tara Canyon – the deepest canyon in Europe. Its landscape is so untouched that it is protected by UNESCO, and its water is clean and drinkable along the entire course – a true rarity in modern Europe.
In this guide, you will discover Tara Canyon, the famous Đurđevića Tara Bridge, and how to organize the perfect day starting directly from Bijelić Apartments in Žabljak.
Tara Canyon – the deepest canyon in Europe

When you stand at the edge of Tara Canyon, you feel just how immense nature is, and how small humans are. Beneath you lies a chasm over 1,300 meters deep, with a pearl-colored river winding through it, often shrouded in morning mist that rises like a curtain of smoke. The view says everything without a single word. For a long time, Tara Canyon was a hidden gem of northern Montenegro, and today, under UNESCO protection, it rightfully bears the title of one of the most extraordinary places in Europe.
The Tara River rises in the Komovi Mountains, where two rivers – Opasanica and Veruša – meet and form a watercourse 158 kilometers long. Through the rocky landscape of Durmitor, Tara has carved its path for centuries, leaving behind 82 kilometers of canyon and more than 69 rapids that make this river one of the most exciting in this part of the world. Along its route are more than 40 waterfalls, among which Crna Vrela and Bijela Vrela stand out, as well as the unusually named Đavolje Laži (“Devil’s Lies”) – a waterfall cascading down the cliffs like a silver veil. In summer, the water temperature barely exceeds 12°C, but this is exactly what gives it the crystal-clear drinking water that remains unique in Europe along an entire river course.
The area surrounding the canyon is rich in flora and fauna. Dense forests of black pine, ash, and oak hide the habitats of eagles, bears, and wolves. Here, nature still lives at its own rhythm—untamed and authentic, free from noise and rush. Since 1977, Tara has been part of UNESCO’s “Man and the Biosphere” program, meaning that both its natural and cultural heritage are protected. It is the only area that fulfills three key conditions: hydrological, geological, and biological.
Visitors from all over the world come not only for rafting, but also to see Europe’s rare untouched wilderness—landscapes that many photographers consider among the most beautiful in the Balkans. As National Geographic declared in 2012, rafting on the Tara is a true “tour of a lifetime.” This canyon is not just an adventure; it is a journey into the heart of nature. Some come for adrenaline, others for peace and silence, but everyone leaves with the feeling of having experienced something authentic and greater than themselves.
Đurđevića Tara Bridge: an architectural wonder and the start of the adventure

The construction of the bridge at the location known as Đurđevića Tara was an engineering feat that impressed all of Europe. Between 1937 and 1940, engineer Mijat Trojanović designed this reinforced-concrete arch bridge, 365 meters long and 172 meters above the river. At the time of its completion, it was the largest bridge of its kind in Europe.
The bridge’s wartime history adds another layer of drama. In 1942, the partisans strategically blew up one of its arches to stop the enemy advance. Engineer Lazar Jauković, who had participated in its construction, carried out this difficult task, only to be later executed at the very site of his work. These events inspired the cult film The Bridge from 1969.
Today, the bridge is a major tourist attraction, a place for spectacular photos and the starting point for a 700-meter zip line. However, the most beautiful view of the bridge is not from it—but from a raft as you pass beneath its magnificent arches.
Rafting on the Tara – why is this a special experience?

Rafting on the Tara is not just a simple boat ride—it is an adventure through 69 rapids rated between levels III and V, across crystal-clear drinking water and beneath spectacular cliffs rising 1,300 meters above you. National Geographic ranked it among the best “tours of a lifetime,” and the reason is simple: few places in Europe offer such a combination of wilderness and safety.
Safety is a priority: licensed skippers with international certificates, wetsuits, helmets, life jackets, and disinfected rafts for 8–10 people. The rafting season lasts from April to October—May and June are ideal for adrenaline with high water levels, July and August are perfect for families and swimming, while September and October offer relaxed paddling.

Practical tips for rafting on the Tara

You do not need to bring many things, but two are essential: a swimsuit (or shorts) and a towel. All the key rafting equipment is provided on site (life jacket, helmet, wetsuit, and boots), so there is no need to bring extra layers “just in case.” It is recommended to bring a spare T-shirt and dry clothes for the return trip, sunscreen (sun reflection from the water can intensify exposure), and if you use medication—pack it in a small waterproof bag.
Rain itself is not a reason to cancel the tour—rafting can often be even more pleasant without the heat, and the river gains a stronger mountain character. More important than rain are water levels and the skipper’s safety assessment. Based on conditions, they adjust the pace and choose the style of descent (adrenaline-focused or calmer, family-friendly). The most important rule on the river is to follow the skipper’s instructions, while the life jacket and helmet are standard protection worn throughout the entire tour.
If someone in the group cannot swim, that is not an obstacle for rafting because everyone wears a life jacket and swimming is not required. However, it is important to know the basic rule in case you fall out of the raft (rare but possible): stay calm, turn onto your back, and keep your feet in front of you so you can push away from rocks until the current carries you into calmer water. That is why guides provide a short training session before entering the water and repeat the most important safety rules.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Yes. This is one of our biggest advantages. We pick you up in front of our apartments, drive you to the starting point, wait for you at the finish, and bring you back. There are no hidden costs for fuel or taxis.
Yes, but only from the age of 7, and preferably during calmer periods of the season (July–September). The half-day tour is ideal for families—rapids are navigated in a controlled way, and the skippers are experienced in working with children. For children under 7 years old, rafting is not recommended due to strictly defined safety standards.
Rain is not a reason to cancel! In fact, rafting is often even better because the canyon takes on a mystical atmosphere, and you will get wet from the river anyway. Tours are only canceled in case of extreme weather conditions.
Just a swimsuit (wear it under your clothes) and a towel. We provide all the professional equipment you need (a thick neoprene wetsuit, boots, helmet, and life jacket). If you wear glasses or plan to bring a GoPro, we recommend bringing a strap to secure them.
Half-day rafting – €65
Full-day rafting with lunch – €120
Everything is included in the price.
The water is fresh (around 10–12°C), but the neoprene wetsuits you receive help retain body heat. Swimming is not required—the life jacket keeps you afloat at all times, and our licensed skippers are there to ensure your safety throughout the trip.
Conclusion – your adventure begins here
Tara Canyon is not just a tourist destination to “check off.” Passing under the Đurđevića Tara Bridge, swimming in water you can drink, and looking up at the towering cliffs above you—these experiences become part of your identity.
